Lessons this deadly virus taught me during the infection/ path to recovery from this disease — Nirja Gauchan Shrestha

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you’ll ever know.” — A.A. Milne

One of the burning topic of the moment is “Covid-19 second variant”. The entire nation is under big turmoil and under panic state caused by this deadly virus. I really feel pity about how our country’s government and health sector has been handling this disease who are totally irresponsible and indifferent to patients’ health. Many people are losing lives due to lack of oxygen and proper medical health care, etc. Now, it seems like escaping the virus is almost inevitable.

Today, almost every household has either been infected by the virus or have faced tragic loss of the family members or have relatives/friends who are battling with this virus.

Unfortunately me and my family also fell into trap of this Corona virus few weeks back. But in the brighter side, all of us have almost fully recovered. The first 2 weeks of infection was extremely excruciating and as the time passed by we started getting better with each passing day. We are in our 4th week of infection now and all the symptoms have almost faded away and we are ready to do our PCR test to be 100% secured.

From the moment, me and my family got infected — until our 4th week of post-covid recovery; there has been so many realizations which has struck my mind. I feel sad that it took a life-threatening virus infection to help me reach this realization point.

Anyways better late than never, I would like to share all the important life lessons Covid-19 taught me so that it will benefit everyone who are either battling with this disease or any healthy people in general. Here are the lessons as follows:

  • “Never neglect the importance of good nutrition, proper sanitation and plenty of rest”

Although everything might taste plain/tasteless don’t stop eating. I have always been an extremely picky eater my entire life. So, during the infection when I lost my taste and smell, everything tasted like as if it was boiled in plain water only; I started throwing my each meal and ate extremely less until I fainted in the 5th day and was rushed to the emergency in the ambulance. That incident really shook me and made me realize the importance of good nutrition especially the ones rich in protein and vitamins. Now, since my taste, smell and appetite has returned, its much easier to eat proper nutritious meal.

Besides nutrition, proper sanitation and plenty of rest/sleep is extremely important to heal faster as well. So, don’t neglect any of these essential factors which are necessary for your recovery.

  • “Forgive the people who have hurt you, never hold grudges against anyone, make amends before it’s too late”

We people tend to take heartaches, betrayal very seriously. Small misunderstanding might create a huge difference/gap between close friends. Life is extremely unpredictable. Especially during this pandemic, we never know when will be our last day. So, don’t hold grudge against anyone. Learn to forgive the people who have hurt you. Try to solve the misunderstandings and make amends before it’s too late. Hold on to the people who love you, admire you, cherish you and never, ever let them go.

By holding on to the grudges, you may never ever get chance to bid them last goodbye or tell them how sorry you are or how much you miss them and want to make things right.

  • “Learn to balance your time from your hectic schedule for your family, cousins, relatives & friends”

I cannot stress enough about the importance of spending time with your loved ones. Some of us might make excuses of not being able to take out time for our family/friends by blaming upon our hectic life schedule. But never make this mistake of not being able to balance between your work and family time. Have a family time with your parents, watch a movie together or discuss about how your day went.

During this pandemic lockdown, since it is not possible to do physical gatherings and is advisable to do social distancing, you may simply call your family/friends to know how they are doing. You might be able to brighten their day with just a telephone call as well. It might be the only call they might have received the entire day or they will be happy to know that you have been remembering them. These little moments make a huge impact on everyone’s lives.

I don’t know how many lives this corona virus would take until it realizes that it has tortured the mankind enough.

I have lost so many relatives, loved ones (people I have known my whole life to Covid-19). My heart is filled with guilt and heaviness realizing that I couldn’t take out enough time for them when they were alive. Now, even if I want to, I will never get to tell them how much they mean to me and how much I miss them.

  • “Don’t take anything for granted, you never know how much time you have left. Everyone are not fortunate to get second chances in life.”

You are extremely lucky if you are healthy, have a good shelter, sufficient food to eat, a comfortable bed to sleep on and loving family/friends who absolutely adore you. Not everyone are blessed with all these factors in life. We spend our entire life complaining, contemplating over not having enough wealth or luxuries. Then, when we are about to take our last breath, we finally realize that none of these materialistic wealth matters. You won’t be able to take anything to your grave.

So, before its too late, give importance to actual things and people who matters most to you i.e. Healthy mind and soul & your loved ones. Take care of your health and your body as it’s the most important wealth/asset you have. Let go of all the unhealthy habits which harms your health and decreases your lifespan. Take all the necessary steps to live a healthy and long life.

  • Lastly, the most important lesson is: “Don’t panic, be optimistic. You will get better each day if you take proper care of yourself; mentally, emotionally and physically.”

You can win this battle against corona virus if you just stay positive, be strong and have patience. We, humans are braver than we believe, stronger than we seem, smarter than we think, and loved more than we’ll ever know.

That’s all for today. Stay safe everyone “Sanitize, wear masks, practice social distancing and eat healthy, nutritious food and take plenty of rest.”

None of us are totally safe until this virus goes out of our world for good. Until then, take care of your mental and physical health.
